During the latest Nintendo Direct Square Enix has announced that Star Ocean: The Second Story will be getting a remake titled Star Ocean: The Second Story R. This will be a 2.5D remake.

Star Ocean: The Second Story was originally released in 1998 on the PlayStation. In 2009 an enhanced remaster titled Star Ocean: Second Evolution was released on the PlayStation Portable. The story begins with Claude, a Federation officer, who finds himself transported to an undeveloped planet. While searching for a way home, an encounter with a girl named Rena draws them into a quest to save her people, just as an ancient prophecy foretold. Players will begin their adventure with either Claude or Rena, and depending on their choice, the perspectives and the allies' players recruit will change. Players will get to know party members through the unique ‘Private Actions System’, which will allow them to grow relationships and unlock a variety of different endings.

The remake will feature new difficulty modes, new battle mechanics, full Japanese and English voice overs, original and re-arranged music and fast-travel.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R will be released on 2 November 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. You can now pre-order the game and the collector's edition. You can watch the trailer below.

During the Final Fantasy XVI Pre-Launch Celebration live event that was streamed yesterday Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XVI will actually be getting a day one patch.

The patch will be around 300 MB and will contain the following fixes and optimizations:

  • Fix a control flag issue which can make progress impossible under very specific circumstances;
  • Fix an issue wherein the game could close unexpectedly under very specific circumstances;
  • Optimize performance in several places;
  • Fix some minor text errors.

At first the development team said that they've worked hard to release the game without a day one patch for which they apologised during the live event.

Also during the live event producer Naoki Yoshida mentioned that the game was initially planned to ship on two discs, but about six months before the release the development team they managed to fit the game on one disc to reduce production costs.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released on 22 June 2023 exclusively on PlayStation 5. In Japan digital billboards will be on display starting tomorrow and also the below TV commercial will be aired.

During the Final Fantasy XVI Pre-Launch Celebration event Naoki Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy XVI, has announced that the Final Fantasy XVI demo will be available on Monday 12 June. That's today! The demo can now be downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

The demo will give fans interested in starting the adventure early access to the opening prologue, with saved progress carrying over to the full game after its release. In the demo, take control of Clive Rosfield at the start of his epic tale and learn about his ambitions and goals, as he endures a tragic event sending him on a dark and dangerous path of revenge. Completing the prologue allows players to experience a special battle demo which has numerous abilities unlocked, giving them the opportunity to jump into exhilarating battles and test out a wide array of devastating attacks and combos.

Final Fantasy VII

After Square Enix has been teasing us on social media with developer details from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, during the Summer Game Fest liveshow a new trailer was revealed showing us a glimpse of what the open world will look like.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake project and picks up the story after Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith and Red XIII escape from Midgar. The game will be released early 2024 on two discs exclusively on PlayStation 5.

During Sony's PlayStation Showcase 2023, Square Enix has revealed the launch trailer of Final Fantasy XVI titled Salvation.

The trailer sets the stage for what players can expect when they step into Valisthea next month, where we see the harsh circumstances faced by the Bearers, those born with the ability to cast magicks at will, and we see the truth that lies behind the Mothercrystals, long supposed to have bestowed blessings upon humanity. The new trailer also offers a glimpse of the first steps of Clive Rosfield, the protagonist of the game, as he and his allies fight to take back control of their fate.

Final Fantasy XVI is the next standalone game in the Final Fantasy series and will be released on 22 June 2023 exclusively on PlayStation 5.

Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, that is now only available on Steam and mobile platforms, will be launched digitally for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on 19 April 2023. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series are the first six games from the Final Fantasy series, that were originally released on Nintendo and Super Nintendo, in a remastered version.

The PlaySattion 4 and Nintendo Switch version will contain some unique features like the option to switch between the rearranged and original-based soundtrack for the game, switch between the original font and the pixel-based font, switching off random encounters and adjusting experience gained multipliers between 0 and 4.

You can purchase the games individually or as a complete series in a bundle.

Square Enix has recently announced that Live A Live, that was released on Nintendo Switch last year, will also be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on 27 April 2023.

Live A Live is a RPG in which the player explore eight different stories with eight different characters, each set within different time periods spanning from a pre-historic era to the Wild West, and more. It was originally released in 1994 on the Super Famicom in Japan. In 2022 a remake in HD-2D (the same graphical style from Octopath Traveler) was releaeed worldwide on Nintendo Switch.

A playable demo is available to download from the PlayStation Store and Steam. Players will be able to play the opening sections of three of the eight stories in the game: The Wild West, Twilight of Edo Japan, and The Distant Future. The saved progress can be carried over to the full version.

During PAX East 2023, that was held from 23 till 26 March 2023 in Boston (USA), there was a discussion panel titled Yes, You Can Pet the Torgal: A Final Fantasy XVI Discussion led by Producer Naoki Yoshida and Localization Director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox. During the discussion a new trailer was revealed introducing the world of Valisthea.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released on PlayStation 5 on 22 June 2023.

Square Enix has announced on socials that Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, which was released last year, will receive an update that will be released later this month. The update will feature a wide range of changes, such as framerate improvements, changes to the growth system for Pip, and fixes for other bugs.

Chrono Cross was released back in 1999 on the original PlayStation and tells the story of Serge, who one day wanders into an alternate world. The game is set in the same world as Chrono Trigger and is linked.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is released digital only in most regions. However in Asia a physical version is available. If you want a physical version, you can order it at Playasia.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, the 5th entry in the rhythm action series, is now available for purchase on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line features 385 tracks from Final Fantasy games, three game modes, local and online multiplayer and over 100 Final Fantasy characters you can create a party with. If that is not enough you can purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition or Premium Digital Deluxe Edition to get access to more tracks.

If you never played a Theatrhythm game, there's a demo available that contains 30 tracks. Your progress can be transferred to the full game.
