Sony has announced a new version of the PlayStation 3 and is cutting the price of the current 60 GB version in North America and Europe.

The current price of the PlayStation 3 with the 60 GB HDD of $599 USD / €599 will fall to $499 USD / €499 and the new 80 GB version will be introduced in August for $599 USD / € 599.

The timing of the price cut came as a surprice since Ryoji Chubachi said last Friday that Sony has no plans at present to cut the price.

13/07 Update: Bad news for Europe: Sony has no plans to cut the price in Europe with 100 euros. They have announced that they will release a starter pack here with 2 first party games and 2 controllers for €599.

15/07 Update: Sony has confirmed that the recent price drop of the PlayStation 3 in North America is temporary.

Sony has just released its PlayStation 3 in Japan! The new console from Sony will mostly compete against the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, which is selling bad in Japan. Because of the only 100,000 units available the expectation will be that the PlayStation 3 will be sold out quickly.

The console will be available in the United States on November 17th and in Europe in March 2007, which actually became uncertain.

Today Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced that the release of the PlayStation 3 in Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia will be delayed to March 2007 and will not be released on November 17th. The reason why SCEE has changed the date is a delay in the production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group.

The release in Japan and the North America will remain the same, however there only will be 100,000 units available in Japan and 400,000 in the North America at the release.

Sony

Yesterday Sony held his E3 press conference and announced that the PlayStation 3 will be available in Japan on November 11 and in America and Europe on November 17th.

The console will be available in two models. One with a 20 GB HDD, which will not have a WiFi IEEE 802.11 b/g connection, a memory slot for SD/Compact Flash/Memory Stick and HDMI-exit. This one will have a price card of $499 / €499. The other model will have a 60 GB HDD and will have all the things that are not in the 20 GB model. The advanced model will have a price card of $549 / €599.

The controller has been changed back to the old PS2 controller, but with improvements of course. First the controller is wireless, which is actually a must. Second the controller has motion-sensing capabilities, the controller can be turned in six degrees of movement. Due to this new feature they had to get rid of the Dual Shock feature.
