It's been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which was released in Japan on 3 December 1994. Sony has questioned around 10,000 gamers in Japan what their favorite game is in PlayStation history and which game should receive a remake.

What is your favorite PlayStation game?

  1. Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome
  2. Final Fantasy VII
  3. Dragon Quest IV: Michibikareshi Monotachi
  4. Final Fantasy X
  5. Resident Evil
  6. Dragon Quest VIII: Sora to Umi to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi
  7. Final Fantasy
  8. Dragon Quest VII: Eden no Senshi-tachi
  9. Puyo Puyo!
  10. Tetris
  11. Final Fantasy IX
  12. Kingdom Hearts
  13. Final Fantasy VIII

  15. Gran Turismo
  16. Kingdom Hearts II
  17. Derby Stallion
  18. Sangoku Musou
  19. Resident Evil 2

Japan is the home of the RPG's, that's for sure. Dragon Quest V is their favorite with Final Fantasy VII closely second. What I do notice is where is Final Fantasy VI? And why Tetris? Strange folk.

Square Enix has announced that they have released a port of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King for iOS and Android devices. Originally the game was released on the PlayStation 2 back in November 2004 in Japan, one year later in North America and April 2006 in Europe and tells the story of the kingdom of Trodain which has been cursed by Dhoulmagus and its up to the hero and party to save the kingdom.

This port has been optimized for mobile devices and can be bought from the iTunes Store and Google Play for $19.99/€17.99/£13.99.

Dragon Quest VIII, that is in Europe known as Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King has sold over 600,000 copies in Europe since it's release back on April 13th. For the first Dragon Quest game in Europe this is a success.

Big chance that more Dragon Quest games will be released in Europe. Recently Dragon Quest: Joker (for the Nintendo DS) and Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Nintendo Wii) has been announced.

Today UbiSoft released Dragon Quest VIII in Europe! Finally European gamers can play a Dragon Quest game.
I quickly bought the game myself and found something interesting in the manual. On the last page an ad is showed about Kingdom Hearts II with the text: "The Story Continues, Late 2006". So expect that the game will be released by then. I made a scan of the ad so you can view it yourself.

Update: Square-Enix Europe opened a website called I Love Dragon Quest. There you meat Nobu, the world biggest Dragon Quest fan. You have to distract him from doing the longest marathon play. It's a silly game.

The European version of Dragon Quest VIII, that sold more then 4 million copies in Japan will not support 60 Hz, only 50 Hz. Luckely Square Enix optimilized the game so it will show nice on 50 Hz and no black borders will appear on the screen, like with Final Fantasy X.

One bad thing Square Enix did is editing the title for the release in Europe that caused the 8 to dissapear. Because of this the European Dragon Quest lovers might not expect on any previous Dragon Quest title. Pity.

The game will be released in Europe somewhere in April.

12/02 Update: European Dragon Quest teaser website opened

Square Enix announced that it will release Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King in Europe later this year, following a November 15th, 2005 release in North America. This marks the first time Square Enix's flagship series will hit European retail store shelves. At a special event in London, series mastermind Yuuji Horii emphasized the role the merger between Square and Enix has played in bringing the series to Europe. Enix alone would not have been able to release the game in all territories, Horii explained.

Prior to the merger, Square already had major overseas operations in North America (Square Electronic Arts LLC) and in Europe. In the past Square Enix president Youichi Wada has repeatedly mentioned his company's desire to use these assets to broaden the appeal of Enix franchises such as Dragon Quest and Star Ocean abroad.

Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King will be available in Europe sometime in April.

Edit 15/01: Square Enix has confirmed that they will NOT release the demo for Final Fantasy XII together with the game.
