Blitzball is one of the largest mini-games ever in a Final Fantasy game! You can play the game after the tournament in Luca. Believe me, in the beginning when you never played it, it's hard to win.
¤ Types of Games
You can choose to play a League, Tournament or Exhibition.
-
A League consists of 10 games. The score
system is the same as soccer, 3 points if you win, 1 point by
draw and 0 when you lose. The team with the most points at
the end of the league, wins!
- A Tournament is a single
elimination match. Who win goes through.
- Exhibition is
just train against a other team, which you can choose. You don't
receive exp and there are no items to win. Use this when you are
trying to win techniques.
¤ Teams
You are the captain of the Besaid Aurochs. There are 6 teams: Besaid Aurochs, Luca Goers, Guado Glories, Kilika Beasts, Ronso Fangs and the Al Bhed Psyches. Every team has his own ups and downs. For example the Al Bhed are very fast, but the Ronso are very slow. During the game that will change, because players will change teams sometimes.
¤ Learn Abilities
You can learn abilities from other team players by mark a player before you begin the game. You can see what for skills he/she has equipped and if that ability is highlighted in blue you can learn it too. When your marked player does a ability you can learn it when you press "X" when "Techcopy!" stands in the top-left of the screen. Don't put 2 players to mark one opponent, otherwise the change is small to get it.
.: Scouting Players :.
After you finished the tournament in
Luca you can scout players what for stats they have and you can
hire them. Press "Triangle" when you see someone. Note
that not everybody is a blitzball player. In the begin your
scout level is low, you can only see some things like name,
team, salary etc. But when your scout level increases you can
view their stats, abilities. To increase your scout level win
blitzball games to increase your team level.
.: Blitzball Guide :.
Basics
Blitzball is a side-quest of FFX, and is like a sports game of a cross between Soccer and Football, but underwater.
Each team has five players in the playing field/sphere during each half. Players can also learn abilities, and gain
levels as they play and do more in each game. You can gain experience by passing, shooting, and blocking the
opposite team's passes or shots (goalies too). Each half is five minutes long, and the only time the timer stops
is when it's a Blitzoff (like a jump ball in Basketball; the ball is thrown up and a player must catch it).
Abilities
Obtaining Abilities:
At the screen where you select your team, and then you go onto select the abilities you'll be using during the game,
you will come across a screen where it will ask you to set a mark. This is how you obtain abilities. Here is a step
by step proccess with a few side notes on getting abilities.
- Set a New Mark: When setting a mark, be sure you set one that has the ability name in yellow. If it is in white, your player already knows the ability. If it is yellow, then you will know that your player does not know it, and this would be a new mark.
- Compare Levels: After you have found the ability you wish to learn, look at the player's level. If it is in close range to the player you want to learn the ability, then go ahead and set the mark. But, if you character's level is much higher or lower, don't set the mark. Chances of learning it are low.
- Do Not Duplicate Marks: If you have one character set to learn an ability, and set another player to learn the same ability, chances of either of them learning it are low. And be sure that your player is learning abilities for his position you have him playing in.
- Learning the Ability: During gameplay in Blitzball, when the player you set a mark on uses the special ability, continously press "X" until you hear a small chime noise. If you heard it, learning the ability was a success! If you didn't hear it, try again, for it didn't work...
There will be certain types of abilities you can use, and there will be only certain times you can use them. Below is a list of the types, and times to use them.
- Shooting Techs: Obviously, you use these when you shoot. Various techs/abilities will raise your SP, and others can take out certain players, or even the goalie. Such status effects can be poison (continously lowers their HP, Endurance, and SP), sleep (puts them to sleep) and others that will take a major effect on them.
- Passing Techs: These, explain themselves. You can only use them when you are going to pass to another teamate. When you have someone blocking you, you can use certain techs like Nap Pass, Venom Pass, etc. to take the same effect as the shooting techs (poisin, sleep, etc.). The shooting techs will also raise your passing power.
- Defense Techs: When one of (or multiple) your characters are blocking an opposing player, he will either try to pass, shoot, or break it to your team. If he passes or shoots, your blockers will jump up in an attempt to intercept the ball. If he breaks it, your players will attack. Defense Techs let you use certain abilities when doing this type of attack, and will raise your endurance rate when doing it. They can also set a status effect on a certain player.
- Goalie Techs: Pretty self exlplanitory; the goalie can use a tech when he or she is blocking a shot. It will raise your blocking power, and it will give your goalie extra EXP.
It is highly advised that you use the following tips, to be sure that your have an effective and winning blitzball team.
- Create a Successful Team: Towards the end of the game is when you should start playing Blitzball. Because you will have enough money to sign any player for x amount of games, and you can find any free agent you want. I would suggest you sign Brother, who is located on the Airship (he's driving it), and Wakka, who is also located on the Airship (same room as Brother but near the Save Sphere). Brother is the best free agent you will find in the areas of speed and passing ability. His shot is not that bad either. Tidus and Wakka are weak in every area, except for shooting. They both have a great shot. Keeping Botta from the Aurochs would be a good idea, since he has a great defense. You will also want to find someone else with a great defense to your liking. Be sure to put your best passer up first, your two shooters up second, and your defenders up next, followed by your goalie. It is advised that you find a goalie who has a high blocking rate.
- Getting into the Game: Always be sure that you let everyone do at least three things in the game. If you get the ball in the beginning of the half, you should start off by passing it to everyone. It is a good way to get experience, since everyone has already touched and done something with the ball. Now, you will want to use your best shooter to shoot, and score. Try to get as close as possible incase they invade you and get in your way. Also, be sure to let them shoot a shot, but try to block them so their SP goes down. If/when your goalie blocks it, they will gain experience.
- Dirty Win: If you get the ball about 20 seconds before the game ends, just dodge the opposing team and pass the ball around to your teamates. This prevents two things; 1) them getting the ball and 2) them getting more experience. You can also waste the first half tossing the ball around to your teamates, jacking your EXP up and them getting none. This is a cheap win, but it's effective for blocking them from winning and getting EXP.
