Starting Off
First thing's first; go to the Chocobo Farm and rent six stables. It will cost a lot of gil, but it's worth it. Now, go to the Icicle Inn chocobo tracks, and catch four chocobos. Return to the Chocobo Farm and check the ones you caught. If you caught any Wonderful Females, keep it, then release the others. If you did not, then go back and try again.
Once you have your wonderful female, go to the tracks near the Gold Saucer. Catch four of the chocobos here, and return back to the chocobo farm. If you have a great male, keep it and release the others. If you did not get a great male, continue trying and releasing all the bad ones.
Now you have your great male, and wonderful female. Now, buy tons of greens and feed them to your chocobos to raise their stamina, intelligence, and speed. Continue this until everything is maxed out. Now, go to the Gold Saucer from North Corel and make your way to the Chocobo Square. Here, you must race your Chocobos to raise their Class; two wins per Class improvement. When they ask if you would like your prize or GP, you should probably choose GP. Continue doing this until both of them are Class A.
Now you have two options of obtaining the Carob Nut (you'll need three).
- Option One: (Requires a Lifetime Pass at Gold Saucer & lots of gil)
There is a house off the distance from the entrance of Gold Saucer, and is across the room from the big gliding train vehicle. Continue to run in and out until you see a man appear on the side of the house. Run over to him and buy 100 GP for 10,000 gil. Buy from him five times, so you have 500 GP. Now, run back into the Gold Saucer and make your way to the Wonder Square. Here, talk to the lady who sells mysterious items for GP. Buy the item that costs 500 GP. It is a Carob Nut. - Option Two: (Requires patience & lots of gil)
Leave Gold Saucer back to North Corel, and head back to your airship. Now make your way to Bone Village. The small island in front of it has a red dinosaur monster on it, that you can steal Carob Nuts from. If your characters are at low levels, have restore magic ready. He has a ton of HP, and he is ruthless. He moves pretty fast, so beware. Your attacks will not be at maximum damage, either. Weaken him down, and steal a Carob Nut. Then finish him off. After victory, you can fight him two more times and steal two more Carob Nuts now, since you will need them for later. Or, you can wait and get them until later. It's better if you wait (you'll learn why in a bit).
Getting the Green and Blue Chocobos
Once you have your Carob Nut, return to the Chocobo Farm. Save before you breed, though. Now, go into your chocobo stables, and tell the guy you want to mate them. Mate the two yellow chocobos using the Carob Nut. If you decided to race your Chocobos to Class A, you should have no problem getting a green or blue chocobo. If you only raced one, or niether, or to a lower class, you will come across some difficulty.
Once you have your blue or green chocobo (random each time), be sure to remember or write down it's sex. You will also need to race this chocobo and feed it tons of greens, just like with the yellow ones. Go to the Gold Saucer and race it to Class A or S, whichever you want. Once complete, you will need your second Carob Nut. Use either option one or two from above, but note that the chocobos will need time to mate again. You are going to have to level up for a while, so you should probably use option two so there's less fighting interrupting.
Once you have levelled up for a while, return to the farm. Save, and enter. Talk to the guy again, and choose Mating. If he says that you need to let them rest if they have just mated or were just born, then you still have to waste some time. Here, you can go level up materia or do a sidequest. But fighting enemies is the best choice, because you level your characters and materia up, plus gain more gil.
Once they are ready to mate, you will have to mate the yellow ones again with another Carob Nut. Once the mating process is complete, make sure that this chocobo is the opposite sex and opposite color as before. If not, restart and continue trying.
Getting a Black Chocobo
Now, you have your blue and green chocobos. There seems to be no more use for the yellow chocobos anymore, right? Well, that is wrong. Keep them, for you will need them later. Now, you must, once again, feed your new chocobo with greens until his Speed, Stamina and Intelligence is maxed out. Race the new chocobo to Class A or S, and obtain one more Carob Nut.
You will need to give the chocobos time to breed again, so level up for a while until the man will let you mate again. Remember to keep checking with him once in a while to find out if they are ready or not. Before you do any breeding, save your game. Mate the blue and green chocobos with a Carob Nut. If both were at Class A or S, getting a black chocobo should require little to no difficulty. But, you have to make sure your Black Chocobo is a male.
The time has come to say good-bye. Let your male yellow chocobo go. You do not have to, but if you do not wish to keep it any longer, you can let it go. Same with your blue and green chocobos. Well, the repitive step is once again going to take effect! Feed him until his stats are maxed out, and race him to Class S. Trust me, it will be easy if you maxed out his stats. Once done, leave Gold Saucer. Now, you must go to Goblin Island (see world map pic; it's the island that is unnamed under the KOR mark), and steal a Zeio Nut from a goblin.
Getting a Gold Chocobo
Once you have obtained the Zeio Nut, level up for a while so that the time goes by. Once you have wasted enough time, return to the Chocobo Farm area and save just before entering. Walk inside, and talk to the man in the room with the stables, and choose to Mate the chocobos. Choose the wonderful female (Class A; yellow), and the
black male (Class S), and use the Zeio Nut to mate them.
If you followed this guide to breeding chocobos, you should have gotten the Gold Chocobo. If you didn't, do not worry. It's hard to get. It took me three tries when mating the black and wonderful chocobo. If it did not work, restart and try to mate them again. Now, you can explore the map with your Gold Chocobo, and obtain the special Materia from the Materia Caves!
